The Carnelian or Carneola, is a variety of translucent flesh-red chalcedony. Its reddish color is due to a high iron content. It is also known as Red Agate, Blood Agate, or Carnelian Agate.
As a curiosity, carnelian was once confused with Sardinian jasper. Santa Hildegarda de Bigen had to arrive in the 12th century to differentiate this orange variety from the Sardinian variety, which is brown in color.
